Applications

Galvanised Steel Griplock Tubing Applications

Galvanised Steel Griplock tubing has high tensile strength and strong resistance to crushing. It is particularly well suited to applications requiring the absorption of vibration and thermal expansion, as well as noise attenuation.

Typical applications include:

  • Ducting – suitable for the ducting of air, smoke and fumes
  • Extraction – flexible tubing for smoke, fumes and other extraction requirements
  • Exhausts – suitable for flexible exhaust applications
  • Dry Bulk Handling – suitable for handling ash, dust, paper trim, grain and plastic pellets
  • Material Handling – flexible tubing for conveying and handling dry materials
  • Protective Casings – suitable as protective capillary casing for instrument cables and wires
  • Vibration Absorption – particularly suited to applications where vibration needs to be absorbed
  • Thermal Expansion – suitable where movement caused by thermal expansion needs to be accommodated
  • Noise Attenuation – suitable for applications requiring noise attenuation

Manufacturing Tolerances

All metallic Griplock tubing is manufactured to internal diameter (ID) sizes.

  • Up to and including 76mm ID: +0.5mm / -0.0mm
  • Over 76mm ID: +1.0mm / -0.0mm

Recommended Flow Direction

Recommended flow direction for Griplock flexible metal tubing

The design of the Griplock section provides a particularly smooth surface in one direction. Whitehouse recommends that the media passing through the tubing follows the specified flow direction of the hose.

Following the recommended flow direction helps to:

  • Protect the media passing through the tubing
  • Protect the tubing itself
  • Provide optimum flow characteristics
  • Help prevent damage to the media or tubing when handling abrasive materials such as plastic pellets

Griplock Flexibility Options

Griplock tubing is available in different levels of flexibility depending on the application and tube size.

Stiff / Stayput

By ‘squashing’ the tube during manufacture, a stiffer tube is produced with increased air-tightness and ‘stayput’ properties.

Medium Flexibility / Mid Flex

Mid Flex is the standard Griplock product and is the most popular option, making it ideal for most applications.

Loose / Floppy

By reducing the pressure on the tooling during manufacture, the tubing is produced with maximum flexibility, allowing it to move freely.

Loose / Floppy and Stiff / Stayput options are available up to 76mm ID. If neither is specifically required, the tubing is supplied as Medium Flexibility (Mid Flex) as standard.

All sizes over 76mm ID are supplied as Mid Flex.

Please state the required flexibility in the notes section when placing your order.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Galvanised Steel Griplock Tubing

What is Galvanised Steel Griplock Tubing?

Galvanised Steel Griplock is a flexible stripwound metal tube manufactured from a single metal strip wrapped around a mandrel to create a fully interlocked section.

What is Galvanised Steel Griplock used for?

Typical applications include ducting and extraction, exhausts, dry bulk and material handling, protective casing, vibration absorption, thermal expansion and noise attenuation.

What materials can Griplock be used to handle?

The stated dry bulk handling applications include ash, dust, paper trim, grain and plastic pellets.

What is the maximum operating temperature?

Galvanised Steel Griplock has a maximum operating temperature of +500°C.

What sizes of Galvanised Steel Griplock are available?

The standard technical data covers internal diameters from 6mm to 508mm. Whitehouse can also manufacture intermediary sizes where required.

Does Griplock have a recommended flow direction?

Yes. The Griplock section provides a particularly smooth surface in one direction. Following the recommended flow direction helps provide optimum flow characteristics and protect both the media and the tubing.

Is Griplock suitable for abrasive materials?

Griplock can be used with abrasive materials such as plastic pellets. Following the recommended flow direction helps prevent damage to both the media and the tubing.

What flexibility options are available?

Griplock is available as Loose / Floppy, Medium Flexibility (Mid Flex) or Stiff / Stayput up to 76mm ID. Mid Flex is supplied as standard where a specific flexibility is not requested.

What flexibility is supplied for sizes over 76mm ID?

All Galvanised Steel Griplock sizes over 76mm ID are supplied as Medium Flexibility (Mid Flex).

What is Stiff / Stayput Griplock?

Stiff / Stayput Griplock is produced by ‘squashing’ the tube during manufacture. This creates a stiffer tube with increased air-tightness and stayput properties.

What is Loose / Floppy Griplock?

Loose / Floppy Griplock is manufactured with reduced pressure on the tooling, producing maximum flexibility and allowing the tubing to move freely.

Can non-standard sizes and lengths be supplied?

Yes. Whitehouse can manufacture intermediary sizes where required, and non-standard lengths can also be ordered.
